Feeder Busway vs Plug-in Busway: What Is the Difference?

Quick answer: A feeder busway moves power from point A to point B with no outlets along the way, like a big cable replacement. A plug-in busway has tap-off points along its length, so you can draw power wherever you need it. Most projects use both: feeder for the backbone, plug-in for distribution.
These two terms confuse a lot of first-time buyers, and honestly, some sellers too. The difference is simple once you picture it.
Feeder busway: the highway with no exits
A feeder busway does one job: carry a large current from the source to a destination. Transformer to main switchboard, generator to ATS, that kind of run. There are no tap-off points, no outlets, nothing along the way. It is essentially a big, tidy, low-impedance cable that happens to come in a metal housing. Because there are no outlets, feeder sections are simpler, a bit cheaper per meter, and can reach very high ratings.
Plug-in busway: the one with doors along the corridor
A plug-in busway has openings at regular intervals, usually every half meter to one and a half meters, where you insert a tap-off box to pull power out. This is the type that runs up a high-rise shaft feeding every floor, or across a workshop ceiling feeding machines that might move next year. The boxes can often be inserted live, which is the feature facility managers love most.
How they work together
Picture a 30-story tower. A feeder busway runs from the basement transformer up to each electrical room. From there, a plug-in busway climbs the shaft, and every floor taps its power through a box. The feeder is the highway, the plug-in is the street with driveways.
Which one you need
If you only need to get power from one fixed point to another, buy feeder. If loads sit along the route, or might be added later, buy plug-in. If you are not sure, tell the manufacturer what the run looks like and where the loads are. A decent supplier will map feeder and plug-in sections onto your single-line diagram for free, because getting it wrong at the factory is expensive to fix on site.
